We are excited to share some important news regarding upcoming changes to New Zealand's immigration pathways!
From August 2026, two new residence pathways will be introduced, offering expanded opportunities for migrants looking to secure their future in New Zealand.
These changes are particularly significant as they could benefit many migrants who previously did not have a clear pathway to residence. We believe this will open up new possibilities for a wider range of individuals. The two new residence pathways are:
Skilled Work Experience pathway
To apply under this pathway, you must:
Work in a skilled role (ANZSCO 1 to 3); and
Have at least 5 years of directly relevant skilled work experience, including 2 years in New Zealand paid at or above 1.1 times the median wage
A key advantage of this pathway is it offers a route to residence for those who may not hold a degree.
Trade and Technician pathway
To apply under this pathway, you must:
Work in one of the specified trades or technician roles (ANZSCO 1 to 3); and
Have a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification (of at least 120 points); and
Have at least 4 years post-qualification directly relevant skilled work experience, including 1.5 years in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage.
This pathway is for qualified tradespeople and technical roles, recognising the value of hands-on training and real world experience. It offers skilled migrants in the trades an alternative route to residence, while giving them the opportunity to live and work in New Zealand.
"Immigration Minister, Erica Stanford stated, “The Skilled Work Experience pathway is designed to help New Zealand employers retain experience workers who are already contributing to New Zealand’s economy and have demonstrated value in their roles”
"The Trades and Technician pathway recognizes the practical skills needed in industries where sub-degree qualifications are widely used and valued”
More changes on the way
Other changes that will come into effect from mid-2026 and will have a positive impact for many migrants looking to secure residence include:
Increased points for New Zealand university-led qualifications
New Zealand work experience requirements for residence will be reduced for some pathways from a maximum of 3 years to a maximum 2 years.
Migrants applying for residence will not need a pay rise to meet median wage when they apply for residence
To ensure these pathways are focused on genuinely skilled migrants, some occupations will be excluded from these pathways (Red List) or be required to meet additional eligibility requirements to access the skilled work experience pathway (Amber List). These settings will help manage immigration risk and ensure the system remains focused on genuine skill needs.
Immigration New Zealand will be releasing details about specific trades and technician qualifications in the coming months.
We will share more details about these new pathways as they become available.
