Skilled trades fast tracked to residence

New Zealand is making significant moves to tackle talent shortages in the manufacturing sector by introducing a fast-tracked residency pathway for skilled tradespeople. This new initiative aims to strengthen the economy and create a diverse and resilient workforce essential for the growth of various manufacturing industries.
The need for skilled workers in manufacturing is more pressing than ever. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford highlights the critical nature of this issue, stating, "When we don’t have enough people to fill these roles, productivity slows, business growth stalls, and the economy feels the pressure."
From 18 August 2025, ten new trade occupations will be added to the Green List's Work to Residency pathway. This requires a migrant to have two years of work experience in the relevant occupation in New Zealand and be working for an Accredited Employer when they apply for residence".
The New Opportunities for Skilled Trades
The occupations being included are:
Metal Fabricator
Metal Machinist (First Class)
Fitter (General)
Fitter and Turner
Fitter-Welder
Pressure Welder
Welder
Panel Beater
Vehicle Painter
Paving Plant Operator
Including these roles in the Green List will significantly attract skilled tradespeople to New Zealand, thereby supporting the manufacturing sector. This long-term strategy addresses immediate labor shortages while also crafting a pathway for residency for skilled tradespeople.
The Importance of the Manufacturing Sector
"Manufacturing is a powerhouse for the New Zealand economy, contributing about $21.billion annually. In recent years, however, the sector has faced pressure from a tough economic climate," Small Business and Manufacturing Minister Minister Chris Penk says. However, the sector has been facing challenges, with productivity declining by 3.4% in 2023 due to a lack of skilled personnel. Bringing in skilled overseas talent will elevate productivity levels, helping New Zealand maintain a competitive edge in the global market.

According to Minister Penk, "As businesses unlock their potential, they will be better positioned to expand, create new jobs, and take on more local apprentices." This is vital for fostering prosperity across various communities throughout New Zealand and sustaining industries that rely heavily on skilled labor.
