From 29 September 2025, the New Zealand Government will introduce the Parent Boost Visa — a new immigration option that promises to help reunite migrant families by allowing parents of New Zealand citizens and residents to stay in the country longer than ever before. But does it really deliver on that promise?

What is the Parent Boost Visa?

The Parent Boost Visa is a multiple-entry visa valid for five years, with the option to apply for a second five-year visa, allowing parents to stay in New Zealand for up to ten years. On the surface, this sounds like a significant step forward for family reunification.

However, the visa comes with strict eligibility requirements, and it’s essential to understand the finer details before applying.

Key Requirements

To qualify, parents must meet a range of criteria, including:

  • Health and character requirements

  • Financial self-sufficiency

  • Holding suitable health insurance

  • Being sponsored by their New Zealand-based child, who must:

    • Be a citizen or resident

    • Accept responsibility for their parent’s essential living and accommodation costs

    • Provide support for healthcare access

    • Cover repatriation or deportation costs if necessary

Financial Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following financial conditions:

  • Sponsoring child’s income must be at least the NZ median wage (currently NZ$69,804.80) for one parent, with an additional 0.5x for each additional parent

  • Parent(s) must have a personal income equivalent to the NZ Superannuation:

    • Single parent: NZ$32,611.28 per year

    • Couple: NZ$49,552.88 per year

  • Parent(s) can show personal funds of:

    • NZ$160,000 (single)

    • NZ$250,000 (couple)

Insurance Requirements

Parents must hold comprehensive health insurance, which includes:

  • Emergency medical care: at least NZ$250,000 per year

  • Cancer treatment: at least NZ$100,000 per year

  • Repatriation and return of remains

Insurance must be renewed annually and maintained throughout the stay in New Zealand.

Important Considerations

While the Parent Boost Visa offers a unique opportunity, there are a few caveats to keep in mind:

  • Health Checks: Applicants must maintain good health and complete medical examinations again after 3 years outside New Zealand.

  • Insurance Costs: The insurance requirements are significant and could be costly, especially for older parents with pre-existing conditions.

  • No Pathway to Residence: This is not a residence visa. Even after 10 years in New Zealand, parents must return to their home country.

  • Remote Work: Parents may be able to work remotely for an overseas employer, though local work rights are not included.

  • Other Options Exist: This isn’t the only visa available. Parents may also be eligible for:

    • General Visitor Visa

    • Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

    • Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa

Final Thoughts

The Parent Boost Visa can be a valuable option for families looking to spend extended time together in New Zealand. However, it comes with considerable responsibilities and costs, particularly around insurance and sponsorship. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution, and careful planning is required.
